Call on Me in your day of trouble.

I will deliver you and you with glorify Me.

Psalm 50:15

My Life B.C.

I'm retired from Colorado State University. My husband, Kevin, and I enjoy outdoor activities and practice a healthy lifestyle, both diet and exercise.

My Journey Begins

In January 2010, I received a diagnosis of breast cancer. I went for a mammogram for the first time in 8 years with no indication that there could be a problem; no lumps or visible signs of a problem. I was called back for further mammography, then a needle biopsy.

I totally expected that the microcalcifications they were checking would be benign. I lead a very healthy lifestyle. I eat right, drink lots of purified water, exercise, take supplements and do everything else I have read that prevents disease and am a very healthy person, never getting sick, so how could I get a disease that is often thought of as being the result of a poor diet?

However, the following Monday I received a call from the doctors office with a report of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). I had read about this recently and knew it wasn’t life threatening.

Confirmations

Wednesday I went to my usual Bible study, Bible Study Fellowship. That day’s lesson was from John 11, the raising of Lazarus. Karen, the lecturer, emphasized Jesus’ words that this sickness was not unto death, but that God would be glorified. She said to her audience of about 500 women, “Did you just get a diagnosis of cancer? Are you waiting for test results? Whatever is happening to you, use it to glorify God.” Then she gave this scripture which I knew was a word for me from the Lord. Psalm 50:15, “Call on Me in your day of trouble. I will deliver you and you will glorify Me.”

Thursday morning I went to the intercessory prayer meeting at Resurrection Fellowship where I attend church. Pastor Diane called up Carolyne to pray for me. Afterward, Carolyne invited me to a support group of ladies from Rez who have been through breast cancer, most of them recently. One of these women, Lynda, has just gone through breast cancer treatments this past year. Kevin and I sit behind Lynda and her husband in church. One Sunday during prayer for healing Lynda was prayed for. Afterward I asked her what we were praying for her about and she said she had breast cancer and was starting chemo treatments the next day and this would be her journey with Jesus. I watched Lynda for months as she went through chemotherapy treatments, then surgery, then radiation. She was there every Sunday praising God! She was such an inspiration to me and at the time I never dreamed that I had breast cancer all the while.

Friday morning I had an appointment with a surgeon that the doctors office made for me. I prayed for direction as to the surgeon and got confirmation that this was the surgeon. On the way to his office I prayed that if this was the right surgeon, I would bond with him. The minute he walked into the office with his smiling face and positive manner, I liked him. Then on the way out at the checkout desk, the assistant was someone I knew years back. She looked up and recognized me and said, “I am sorry to see you here, but you are in good hands.”

Into the Light

The surgeon scheduled me for a lumpectomy on February 2nd as an outpatient. Kevin’s parents picked me up and took me to the hospital and stayed there and fasted for me all day. Pastor Becky from Rez came and prayed for me before surgery. I went home after the surgery and never needed a pain pill. At the time of surgery extra tissue was removed as well as two lymph nodes. A few days later I got a call from the surgeon’s office with the pathology report. The surrounding tissue contained invasive carcinoma, grade 3, as well as high grade ductal carcinoma. This was a surprise to the surgeons as it did not show up on the mammograms. The scripture says that those things which are hidden in secret will be brought to the light and the Lord brought this to the light before it became a bigger problem.

I was then sent for an MRI which confirmed the pathology reports. It took a while to get the next surgery scheduled which was March 25th. Meanwhile, there was a lot of time for prayer and pray I did, calling on the scriptures that the Lord had given me. I went to the support group lunches (“B&B Club”) and these amazing ladies, Carolyne, Sarah and Lynda, were such an encouragement to me, praying for me and sharing their experiences.

I also went to Brother Mel, Pastor of All Nations Church, for deliverance prayer as I believe cancer is a spirit. He prayed over me for at least an hour. Thank you, Brother Mel.

Palm Trees

On the day of the second surgery, while I was waiting to go to the hospital for an overnight stay this time, I picked up a book that I was reading by Joel Osteen. The chapter I opened to was perfect for that day. He was teaching on being a bounce-back person. He talked about trees and how during a hurricane, sturdy oak trees will be rooted up and mighty pines will be broken but the skinny palm tree bends with the wind and can be bent for hours with its branches touching the ground and will bounce right back after the storm while the other trees are broken and uprooted. He said that while the palm tree is bent during the storm that it’s roots are actually strengthened. Psalm 92:12 says that the righteous flourish like the palm tree. He went on to say,“Why did God compare us to the palm tree instead of to the mighty oak or the majestic pine? It is because we are strengthened during adversity and we will bounce back.”

The surgery went well. Kevin, his Mom and my friend, Harriet, were there with me. After surgery I never needed a pain pill. I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. My precious husband, Kevin, was by my side throughout, encouraging me, praying for me and taking care of things. It is wonderful to have a Godly husband and I praise God for him.

When the pathology report came back this time, it was a real praise the Lord! No invasive cancer was found. No further treatment was needed. No chemotherapy or radiation was recommended which was my prayer. He has delivered me!

The morning after I got this report I woke up with a song by Alan Jackson going through my mind, “It’s all about Him.” We serve an awesome God, Who cares about every detail of our lives. He brought this to light so that it could be dealt with. Carolyne had given me a book she published with scripture readings for each day as you go through cancer treatment (Radiation Rhema). The day after the final report, which also was Good Friday, I came to the last reading in the book, which was Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to Him Who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, TO HIM BE GLORY in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.”

“Call on Me in your day of trouble. I will deliver you and you will glorify Me.”
